The current head of the Executive is Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, the Governor of the State of Osun.
The Executive is the part of government at the State that has sole authority and responsibility for the daily administration of the State. The executive branch executes the laws that are passed by the Legislative arm.
The power of the Executive arm of government is vested in the Governor of the State who is also the Chief Security Officer in the State. This vested power can be exercised either directly or indirectly through the Deputy Governor or Commissioners of the government of the State or officers in the public service of the State. He also has the authority to appoint or dismiss cabinet members and officials. This branch of government also includes the Deputy Governor and other officials such as members of cabinet. The Deputy Governor stands in for the Executive Governor and can assume the governorship position when the need arises.
This branch of government works hand in hand with other arms of government and is to exercise the power so as to protect the interest of the Federal Government.
The Executive Council
The State Executive Council refers to the body of Commissioners of the government of the State, established by the Governor. Members of the Executive Council, with exception to the Deputy Governor are appointed by the Governor in due consultation with the Legislative arm who approves such before membership.
It is composed of the Governor, Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Commissioners and Special Advisers. The Council is the highest administrative decision making body in a State and in charge of deliberating on key issues of great priority to the State.
The functions include but are not limited to:
- Deliberate on general direction and policies of the State
- Coordinate the activities of the Governor, the Deputy Governor and the Commissioners of the government of the State in the discharge of their executive responsibilities
- Advise the Governor generally in the discharge of his executive functions
The State Executive Council in the State of Osun meets every Wednesday and key decisions and deliberations are communicated to the general public.
